Think about your end-user!
One of the things that is often overlooked in webdesign and development is the importance of how your end-user is actually going to use the site. Too often it can become all about using fancy new technology or web-trends, over complicated design and poor choice of colours when in actual fact for over 80% of websites the primary user of a website is the client/customer/end-user.
Try to bear this in mind when you are building your site, forget that you know how to use the site and put yourself into the shoes of the average user, can you find information easily? Is the information presented in a clear and simple way? How many clicks does it take to find your contact details?
I like to use these few steps:
- Have a call to action on every page including your home page. Make it easy to find your contact details and they will contact you.
- Don’t be afraid of white space. Space your copy give it chance to breathe and allow your users eyes chance to pick out the important bits.
- Follow web standards. Make sure you use fully valid W3C HTML and CSS, this will go a long way to making your site work on all browsers making it more likely that your user will be able to see your site how it is meant to be.
With more and more websites popping up every day make yours stand out by making it easy to use and presenting your information clearly!
